Transparency: the Greatest Political Fiction

Published on April 26th, 2010

Honest to goodness, do you believe it anymore? Is there a greater oxymoron than a transparent politician? Perhaps a gullible electorate rates a close second? For all the cries about the lack of transparency in the Obama administration, now the GOP calls for closed door meetings in the debate over finance reform. Once again, another double standard from our elected officials. From the White House to Wall Street seems everyone wants the negotiation under wraps.

I think we all get the concept of ‘Top Secret’ stuff when it comes to certain “need to know ” topics, but how is it that the people’s business is none of the people’s business?

Politicians thrive in the rhetoric of opaque. Clearly, the political pledge of transparency is a fabrication for Republicans and Democrats alike. When we vote out one party in favor of the other, we don’t get change, we get short-changed. Promise as they may, transparency is seldom one that they keep.
