Now that my taxes are in the mail, I figured that there is no better time to talk about the Tea Party, or better yet, my version of a T-Party. I’m headed to the Mid Atlantic Truck Camper Rally in Sanford, Virginia.

Truck camping, or T-partying is one of my favorite ways to explore. My first exploration of Denali National Park in Alaska was in a fully stocked Lance truck camper. I spent 10 days adventuring in one of the coolest places on earth with my good friend and renowned photographer/videographer Michael Mauro.

From that moment on I was hooked. Unlike other forms of RV’ing, T-Partying allows me to get off the road and off the beaten path. To me, that’s what exploration is all about.

Mary Burrows

Our guest today is Mary Burrows. Mary is the Manager of Chemical Development at Thetford Corporation, the world’s leading maker of portable and permanent RV toilets, and the holding tank deodorants and related additive products used in and on RVs. Mary received her Bachelor’s degree from Albion College in 1980, with majors in Chemistry and English. She has worked at Thetford for over twenty years, and spends much of her time researching and developing RV deodorant and cleaning products. She is a recognized expert in the area of treating holding tank waste and the deodorants used in RVs, and is called upon repeatedly for her knowledge and experience in this field.

In a study conducted by Opinion Research Corporation, and summarized in Packaging Digest in Feb 2009:

“Four out of five people say they are still buying green products and services today – which sometimes cost more – even in the midst of a U.S. recession.”

“Half of the 1,000 people surveyed say they are buying just as many green products now as before the economic downturn, while 19% say they are buying more green products.

Fourteen percent say they are buying fewer environmentally green products.”

“About one in three say they don’t know how to tell if green claims are true. One in 10 consumers blindly trust green product claims.”

“Consumers are verifying green claims by reading the packaging (24%) and turning to research (going online, reading studies, 17%).”

In an article from Brandweek in Feb 2009, quoting from a study by Mintel:

“A $17.7 million business in 2003, the Chicago-based market research company says the green cleaning category quadrupled sales to $64.5 million by 2008. by 2013, Mintel anticipates eco-friendly cleaners will do an astounding $623 million in business and account for 30 percent of the household cleaners market by then (compared with 3 percent last year)”.

“Green Works brought green cleaning products into mainstream supermarkets, which have seen green sales increase more than 170% from 2007-08 and market share rise 16 percentage points.”

As you can see green is growing rapidly. Many manufacturers want to claim their products are green. The only way to know for certain if a product is green is to look for products that are certified or recognized green by a third party.

Our guest today is David Houle; a futurist, strategist and speaker. He has always been slightly ahead the curve. Houle spent more than 20 years in media and entertainment. He has worked at NBC, CBS and was part of the senior executive team that created and launched MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1 and CNN Headline News. He helped to create television series on A&E for his client Bill Kurtis, “Investigative Reports’ and “American Justice,” introducing single subject documentaries and legal programming to prime time before those programming concepts became common place. Environmental and animal rights groups are seeking an injunction in U.S. District Court in Montana to stop the hunts. Judge Donald Molloy is seeing the case, and it’s uncertain how and when he will rule. Earthjustice attorney Doug Honnold sought an an “injunction to stall hunting in both Idaho and Montana as part of a lawsuit seeking to restore protection of the wolves under the Endangered Species Act.”

“Although the gray wolf has rebounded from virtual extinction in the region a mere twenty years ago, wolf populations in the northern Rockies are not yet stable enough to lose these critical protections” according to the Sierra Club.  “The management of the animals now falls to individual states to implement as they see fit, including hunting and aggressive agency management.”

“The population of gray wolves in the northern Rockies consists of three relatively isolated sub-populations, rather than one genetically connected group.  There are approximately 1,600 individuals and 100 breeding pairs in the region.  Many scientists maintain that this number is not high enough to ensure long-term population viability.” The Sierra Club Website continues,   “Instead, to have a sustainable population, wolves need to number between 2,000 and 5,000 individuals in the northern Rockies.  The state management plans tend to slide backwards, rather than allowing wolf populations to grow naturally.  Idaho, for example, plans to allow the number to be reduced to around 100 individuals, down from approximately 900.”

“In Idaho, the limit is 220 wolves, and in Montana, it would be 75. Members of the Nez Perce tribe in Idaho can kill up to 35 wolves” according to CNN.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” according to Charles Dickens in A Tale of Two Cities. “It was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair….”

Award-winning photographer Michael Mauro shot the above image while we were studying at a Daoist Monastery on Wudang Mountain, China. The Chinese Yin Yang symbol reflects a healthy mind’s vision of fear and the path to blending the good with bad, the best with the worst.

Obviously, there are those fears that are healthy for us, protecting us from those things that could cause us serious bodily injury or even death, if we are not careful. Most of us don’t stick our hands into an open fire. Those would be the best fears.

Now, the worst fears, if you will, are those that freeze us in our mental and physical tracks for no truly protective benefit or reason, public speaking jumps to mind. These phobias or anxiety producing situations actually cause a great deal of stress to our bodies and our brains. Long term, sustained exposure to the chemicals, coursing through our bodies and our brains during our perceived “flight or flight” situations have a detrimental affect to our mental health. More philosophically, a courageous mind is a smiling mind.

Here we go. We can begin to train our brains to be braver by finding those situations that frighten us, and slowly, methodically free ourselves to face them. First step, visualize yourself confronting those things you are timid about. Make the mental movie, through your own eyes. Once you have successfully choreographed your courage in your mind’s eye, slowly practice expressing your new found courage outwardly. Steadily assert your fledgling assertiveness.

Remember, our fears also arise from the mental movies we make, so re-recording over those fearful thoughts with new, powerfully dynamic images of you facing your phobias in your mind’s eye, will make a very powerful impact in your overall mental health.

The 2009 Conservation through Exploration Tour took a huge leap forward over the holiday with the installation of the Xantrex RS3000 Sine Wave Inverter/Charger along with the Xantrex C40 Multi-Function Charge Controller. It was my good fortune to spend a few days earlier this week with Don Wilson from Xantrex learning about the energy management system that will enable me to power and recharge ALL electrical devices on board the Green RV with the natural energies of the sun and wind. Over the next 10 days I will be finalizing the Conservation through Exploration Tour and creating specific ways for everyone interested to be more involved in all aspects of the journey.
