The term “All Natural” is a big hit of late. Like “Green” or “Locally Grown” it connotes a product crafted the “way Nature intended it.” No preservatives, no additives, no artificial colors or tastes just good, fresh, organic, wholesome goodness. Period. We’re looking for nutrition that is healthy, uncontaminated and not package in toxic containers. Sounds great, does it not?

Seems to me we could hold our choice of government to the same picky, health-conscious standards. After all, next to fresh food, water and air is there anything that affects us more than government intervention?

Maybe because it’s electioneering time, maybe because I’m already sick of political commercials filling the radio and TV airwaves, I’m just wondering why we couldn’t create an “All Natural Government.” How about a locally grown, all natural government with no harmful fillers or chemicals additives? Let’s see…..

1. We could make our politicians truly locally grown by repealing the 17th Amendment to our Constitution which was enacted 1913. Instead of our Senators being elected by popular vote, we could have them selected from within State Legislative bodies. They would certainly be much more accountable to the local constituents.

2. We could adopt the advice of Thomas Jefferson and employ the process of Nullification to remove any harmful additives or preservatives. If a law is passed with the equivalent of say, I don’t know, Phenylalanine, we could strip it from the books before it goes on to cause a legislative cancer, so to speak.

3. We most certainly could address the freshness concern by holding all politicians, not just the President, to term limits. We could easily make the 22nd Amendment to our Constitution applicable to all federal legislators. Why go on about recycling and it’s benefits if you are not willing to recycle bureaucrats as well? Is there a better from of waste management then removing career politicians from Capitol Hill?

4. We could make it all natural by simply and courageously stating the fact that Nature is disinterested in our survival. Nature doesn’t coddle and protect us, nor should a government in most cases. We could remember Wordsworth and his belief that we should “come into the light of things and let Nature be your teacher.” Life is a struggle to which nature adds tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, disease and the like. She knows as Frederick Douglas did, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” Big Brother can’t protect us anymore than Mother Nature seems inclined to.

5. As far as organic goes, how about a healthy dose of the 10th Amendment to our Constitution and leave a majority of governmental power to the states themselves? The framers of our Constitution we all over the term organic a constructed it to help protect us from the political pesticides of big government.

I don’t know. Just seems to me if you want to be green, BE GREEN. Don’t pussyfoot around when it comes to politics.

During the dustup last week over the Survival Seed Bank on blogs and media outlets from The Huffington Post to the Colbert Report, (highlighted in my post Media Sowing Seeds of Hypocrisy) I took some time to learn a bit more about gardening in general and seeds in particular. I know, sounds like a great way to spend the weekend; interviewing “Master Gardeners” from all over the U.S. and Canada.

Truth is, I learned a ton.

Did you know that Norway has a bit of a survival seed bank of its own? Or that other seed banks in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Philippines were destroyed by wars and natural disasters. Kind of ironic, don’t you think? “Doomsday” seed vaults wiped out by a doomsday scenarios? Hmmm.

Did you know that a majority of seeds called hybrid seeds are designed with a sort of “planned obsolescence” or a very short shelf life. You can’t continually replant those seeds hoping for the same yield each subsequent season. Not unlike watering down green paint, you keep blending enough light-green paint into the original color and pretty soon, no more green.

Did you know that it’s a bit of a trick to find non-hybrid seeds; not as bountiful as one might think?

Now, I’m far from being an expert, nor will I ever write on book on seed science, but one thing is clear. If governments plan ahead and create seed vaults, what’s wrong with you and I banking a few seeds for a rainy day.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. | When Brian Brawdy goes camping in his recreational vehicle, he doesn’t have to search for an electrical outlet.

He hauls his own power with him.

Brawdy, a self-described adventurer and explorer, travels the United States in a “green” truck camper — a unit that he developed as a showcase for what humans can do to protect the outdoors.
