Mary Burrows

Our guest today is Mary Burrows. Mary is the Manager of Chemical Development at Thetford Corporation, the world’s leading maker of portable and permanent RV toilets, and the holding tank deodorants and related additive products used in and on RVs. Mary received her Bachelor’s degree from Albion College in 1980, with majors in Chemistry and English. She has worked at Thetford for over twenty years, and spends much of her time researching and developing RV deodorant and cleaning products. She is a recognized expert in the area of treating holding tank waste and the deodorants used in RVs, and is called upon repeatedly for her knowledge and experience in this field.

Design for the Environment

In a study conducted by Opinion Research Corporation, and summarized in Packaging Digest in Feb 2009:

“Four out of five people say they are still buying green products and services today – which sometimes cost more – even in the midst of a U.S. recession.”

“Half of the 1,000 people surveyed say they are buying just as many green products now as before the economic downturn, while 19% say they are buying more green products.

Fourteen percent say they are buying fewer environmentally green products.”

“About one in three say they don’t know how to tell if green claims are true. One in 10 consumers blindly trust green product claims.”

“Consumers are verifying green claims by reading the packaging (24%) and turning to research (going online, reading studies, 17%).”

In an article from Brandweek in Feb 2009, quoting from a study by Mintel:

“A $17.7 million business in 2003, the Chicago-based market research company says the green cleaning category quadrupled sales to $64.5 million by 2008. by 2013, Mintel anticipates eco-friendly cleaners will do an astounding $623 million in business and account for 30 percent of the household cleaners market by then (compared with 3 percent last year)”.

“Green Works brought green cleaning products into mainstream supermarkets, which have seen green sales increase more than 170% from 2007-08 and market share rise 16 percentage points.”

As you can see green is growing rapidly. Many manufacturers want to claim their products are green. The only way to know for certain if a product is green is to look for products that are certified or recognized green by a third party.

PRESS RELEASE – Brian Brawdy & Associates

Vancouver Sun posts article, An RV to make you Green with envy, that best describes Brian’s history, philosophy and motivation for ultimately Going Green.

According to article’s author John Mackie, “He’s a character, this Brian Brawdy. Quick-witted and a bit off the wall, but with a serious eco-mission: conservation through exploration.”

Read the rest of the article from the Vancouver Sun

I kicked off the morning with an appearance for the Green RV on GlobalTV in Vancouver (Burnaby), British Columbia . [...]

I kicked off the morning with an appearance for the Green RV on GlobalTV in Vancouver (Burnaby), British Columbia . Anchor Steve Darling is built more like a professional football player than an a TV reporter. He was also a huge pleasure to work with (Sorry, every bit of that pun is intended). We talked about adventure, and the Earlybird RV Show this weekend in Abbotsford .

The response to the Green RV and its message of Conservation thru Exploration have encouraged me once again. This morning a very nice article and photo in The Province stated that “Although hybrid and alternative-fuel RV models have yet to find a mass market, led by eco-pioneers such as Brawdy, the industry seems poised for a green renaissance.” Tomorrow a photo shoot with The Vancouver Sun and a CBC Radio interview in the afternoon point to the popularity of only one thing. Many of us are truly interested in a “green renaissance,” of cutting our dependence on external sources of traditional energy suppliers. Regardless of the type of homes we live in, many share the dream of tapping into the natural and sustainable energies of the sun and wind in hopes of one day saying goodbye to escalating electrical bills from our local utility companies all the while protecting our planet now and in the future.

In the RV industry, the terms “boondocking ” and “dry camping” refer to going off grid; no electrical or water hookups. Like tent camping and backpacking in a way, just a bit more comfortable way, adventures of all types enjoy time spent away from power lines.

Like many of my adventures this year on my national tour, I wasn’t always exactly sure where I was headed. Truth be told, most times I had a general idea, or direction in mind, but that was about it. Many times I would meet someone along the way and they would suggest a local wilderness area to which I was totally oblivious. Then there were those places that my Garmin GPS highlighted as a wild space. This time was different. One of my favorite days of this tour began at a newspaper box in Tacoma, Washington.

The headline from The News Tribune jumped out at me… “‘Gator’ Gauthier leaving Rainier” ran alongside the headshot of a pretty determined looking guy. Reading reporter Craig Hill’s article, “Respected Rainier ranger to leave park for D.C. fellowship” moved me. According to the article, Mike ‘Gator’ Gauthier, credited with saving numerous lives on Mount Rainier over his 18 year career and wrote the popular and acclaimed ‘Mount Rainier: A Climbing Guide,’ is leaving to accept a Bevinetto Fellowship. But what grabbed me most was his quote “My DNA cares about this place.”

30 seconds after reading his words I was on the phone with 411 asking for the main number at the park. Two minutes later I was on the phone with Mike trying to set an appointment to meet with him. He graciously agreed and invited me to his office in Longmire on Mount Rainier. There was no way I would miss it.

We caught up today for about an hour, traded stories and discussed the concept of Dirt in Your DNA. Our brief meeting was a highlight of my Tour. He is as humble a BA as I have ever met. His demeanor and his eyes instantly inform you that he gets it, that his passion is total and that life is something to be thrilled by. One of his sayings will stick with me for the remainder of my days. What I call “The Voice,” he calls “Cosmic Nudges” – when you find your purpose, the universe directs you from within, whether you feel it or hear it, you know you’re on the path.

Thanks Mike!
