Now, I am not a rocket scientist nor a Pentagon military expert. I too, have no idea what actually happened. Here is what I do have, a few pictures of a NASA Space Shuttle launch in southern Florida a few seasons back. The second picture (below) is of the contrail itself just seconds after the launch.

As we watch the footage of the mysterious missile launch, compare these pictures in your mind. Weather anomaly? Optical illusion? UFO? Missile launch, accidental or otherwise? Black Ops? Foreign military training? You make the call. It could be something, it could be nothing.

I can’t wait to here the explanation when, or if it comes. This should be good. I don’t want to go all Area 51 on you, but how cool is this explanation going to be? What do  you think? Better yet, since the military will not claim it, if it happens to be yours, could you email me?

Are you growing tired of being told what you want, what you like or dislike? Are you fed up being told how you feel or what you want to see?

“The American people are tired of …. __________.”

“The American people want a ….__________.”

“I know what the American people are looking for in a candidate” most politicians claim. It would be funny if it were not so disgusting.

Perhaps left over from the “I feel your pain” days of former President Clinton, ever notice how politicians use the political cliche and tactic of claiming to have their fingers on your pulse? That they have an intimate idea of your trials, travails and challenges? It is a disingenuous, crafty lie and most people with a second grade reading level know it.

As if that were not enough, the one thing that really grabs me is when they speak as if the “American people” or the “American voters” is a set or a classification that they are not grouped with. Think about it. They never say, “we are tired of higher taxes” it’s always the “American people are tired of higher taxes.” They never say, “We are looking for change in Washington, DC” it’s always the “American people are looking for change in Washington, DC.”

“I hear what the American people are saying.” What, are you a foreigner? I expect Putin, Castro, Chavez and the like to refer to us as “the Americans” but our own politicians refer to us as a differentiated set of people? Obviously, they’ve forgotten they are a piece or a constituent part of the very constituency they distance themselves from?

Do you ever refer to your foot as “the foot” or your fingers as “the fingers?” If you have a pounding headache do you say, “Hey Doc, the headaches?”

This isn’t a semantic debate. Listen to their words. The political class is outside the group “the American people. It isn’t a “We” but an antithetical “they” when politicians refer to us, to you and me. Politicians feel themselves to be “other than” the people that elect them, they articulate their positions from outside the unit, in mathematical terms, of the majority. They believe themselves contrary to us and their very words prove it, a Freudian Slip if there ever was one, an idiotic idiom that we should hold them accountable for on election day.

Apparently, if you head to certain Florida beaches with a shovel and sand bucket in tow, you are in trouble with the Feds. As a part of the Gulf oil leak cleanup, you are not allowed to dig in the sand.

As hard as it is to believe, a TV reporter from WEAR ABC 3 was threatened with arrest and harassed for wanting to dig in the sand with his plastic shovel. That’s right, a plastic kids shovel could get you carted off to jail.

Thank God for the Sand Castle Cops! Where would be without them? The brave protectors of our beaches. I, for one, will sleep much easier.

If Terry Jones and his happy crew at the Dove World Outreach Center want to send their anti-Islamic message in a bold and brave way, send it from the streets of Kabul, Kandahar or Mazar-e-Sharif. If you want to cause a stir, go torch it in front of the Taliban. Don’t sit in Gainesville wrapped in your police protection and Constitutional right to free speech, go sing your anthem to Al-Qaeda. If you want a publicity stunt, take it to the people of Pakistan, straight up, face to face. Take your bravado to Baghdad, while you’re at it.

Look, I’m a HUGE fan of our First Amendment right to speak like an idiot if we choose. If Terry Jones wants to exercise that right, he should go hurl his insults in person. If he wants to leave his mark on life, go do it in Mosul. Don’t stand behind our troops, knowing they will ultimately take the beating for you. Stand up, butch up, buy yourself and your congregation tickets to Takrit and then light your match.

This segment has a particular audio backdrop that I find most appropriate. Recorded in the Florida Everglades in July, the sound is the buzzing of millions of mosquitoes trying to gain entry into my tent as the sun sets. Taping a wireless microphone to the lens of  headlamp was all I needed. If you listen closely to the unedited audio, you can hear individual dive-bombing mosquitoes slamming into the light.

Seismic activity striking close to home? Could be. We can’t cross our fingers anymore focusing on the “Big One” hitting outside of our own backyard. California and the Ring of Fire should serve to focus our attention on preparedness wherever we live.

Now, I am not a geologist or a seismologist, nor am I suggesting that earthquakes are migrating in our direction. That said, these quakes should serve us all as a wake-up call and a call to action.

If as you read this post the earth starts to tremble, shake and roll beneath your feet, what would be your first course of action? Your second and third steps? Having a personal preparedness plan in mind, preparing physically with emergency backup supplies is important. A mental preparedness plan is just as vital.

I call them Mind-Ups, visualizations you can practice before a disaster strikes. Picturing yourself in your mind’s eye, surviving any emergency situation, prepares you to face whatever Fate throws at you. Focusing in the Face of Fear begins in your mind. It’s all in your head. Thinking on your feet begins in your brain.

Daydreaming about survival is the greatest disaster preparedness skill you can master.

After deliberating for nearly three hours, a Florida jury recommended the death penalty for Michael King, 38, a plumber who kidnapped, raped and murdered a police detective’s daughter. The jury’s unanimous, 12-0 decision was announced just one week after King was convicted of first-degree murder and related offenses in the January 17, 2008, death of Denise Lee, a 21-year-old mother of two boys.

The heartbreaking tape of Denise Lee’s frantic 911 call on her captor’s cell phone no doubt led the jury to its decision. In Florida, the jury “suggests” a verdict to the Judge. The court is expected to uphold the unanimous decision.

According to CNN, experts testified “that scans indicated that King’s brain was abnormally shaped, especially his frontal lobe: the center for logic, planning and reason. His IQ was described as about 76, in the low range. A person with an IQ of 70 is considered to be mentally retarded, according to testimony.”

NASA: Space Shuttle Discovery a ‘Go’ for Midnight Launch

The Space Shuttle Discovery and the STS-128 crew have lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on its mission to the International Space Station.

According to NASA, “Space shuttle Discovery will carry the Leonardo supply module to the International Space Station during STS-128, along with a new crew member for the station, Nicole Stott.

Commanded by veteran astronaut Rick “C.J.” Sturckow, the STS-128 mission crew will deliver refrigerator-sized racks full of equipment, including the COLBERT treadmill, an exercise device named after comedian Stephen Colbert.

Stott will take the place of Tim Kopra, who moved into the station during STS-127. Pilot Kevin Ford and Mission Specialists Patrick Forrester, Jose Hernandez, John “Danny” Olivas and Sweden’s Christer Fuglesang round out the crew.
