The deadly vortex of winds had barely subsided in Joplin, Missouri and the Media Faceplates were busy buzzing around like [...]

The deadly vortex of winds had barely subsided in Joplin, Missouri and the Media Faceplates were busy buzzing around like annoying little mosquitoes that frequent the moist air after a storm. From the “Why Let Truth Taint the Process” files, here are a couple of the best at MSNBC spinning their own supercell theory.

Tamron Hall mixes it up with a scientist and asks, “What about climate change? You have many people who see these severe storms, and not just the tornados, but the strength of hurricanes and even severe storms, we’re getting hail and high winds right now from Texas, I believe, all the way through the Midwest. Is this a result of climate change or an effect of climate change?” Dr. Howard Bluestein, University of Oklahoma responded, “Well I can’t speak for hurricanes, but for tornadoes and supercells, I don’t think we can prove whether or not the occurrence of all these bad events this year are due to global warming whatsoever. They could be simply due to natural variability. After all, when you think back to some of the other historic events, like April 30 1974, the tornadoes in Missouri in 1953, the tri-state tornadoes back in 1925. If you through the records, you’ll see that every 20, 30, 40 years there are these tremendous widespread outbreaks and some of them occurred long before we were talking about global warming.”

Not to be undone, Al Roker offers on another MNSBC show, “And you know look – yesterday, or the day before yesterday, we had the tornado in Minneapolis,” Roker blathered. “We have had these tornadoes and earlier this week we had a tornado in Philadelphia. And so, you know our weather, or climate change is such now that we are seeing this kind of weather not just in rural parts of our country, but in urban centers as well.”

Just wait as other Face Plates join the chorus, putting their political spin on supercell formation and Tornado climatology. No proof, just more propaganda.

As many of you know, there are not a ton of government assistance programs that I am a fan of; a charitable people are always more powerful. Even in emergency situations there is no stronger force than the compassion, grit and drive of the American People. To that end, I would like to quickly introduce you to a group of passionate, driven women that are doing what they can to help those in need following the devastating storms the last few days in the south.

Though some of you may not agree totally with their politics, you have to dig their passion! On their blog at TWISTERS you will find a substantial list of ways that you can help, right now, today to make a considerable difference in the lives of those hurting this morning in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.

Way to go!

Here are 2 of their suggestions I acted on this morning.

You can call 1-800-SAL-ARMY and donors can text “GIVE” to 80888 to make a $10 donation.

Red Cross : Please help Alabama, Georgia & Miss tornado victims! Text REDCROSS To: 90999 to give $10

The EPA has a unique power in that it exercises its will outside the jurisdiction of your elected officials. Regardless of how you feel about the latest Environmental Protection Agency ruling in Alaska as it pertains to the Shell Company and its offshore drilling permits (details of which are here) the bigger story is that the officials of this particular board are unelected, out of reach apparently of the elected officials you and I put into office.

In this episode of Liberty’s Line in the Sand, Brian looks at some of the particulars and pounds the message home that decisions of this import, when gas prices are climbing daily, when drilling permits are fading just as fast, we need to have a bit more direct access to those making actions of this magnitude.

According to William Wordsworth, the wilderness is a great instructor and guide. “Come forth into the light of things, let Nature be your teacher.” I love those lines. That said, how exciting is it to be able to add his belief to the American political lexicon. When it comes to politics, politicians and the bureaucrats that keep the behemoth alive, we can absolutely look to the natural world to teach us a few things about government.

Lesson one. Governments are like vines, that’s correct. Vines, like the ones you find in forests and jungles. Notice how these growing parasites wrap themselves around the host trees. These free-loading vines, missing both the root structure and sturdy trunks to reach the canopy themselves, they hijack trees, soaking up all the nutrients and the water from the surrounding earth. Then, as a “thank you” for the lift, these vines cover the leaves of the trees blocking them out from the very sunlight they both need to survive.

Sound like anything you know of….Federal vines? State vines? County, City, Municipal vines??

Hmmmm….the “botany of bureaucrats” or “politicians as parasites” or “how vines are killing our forests and our freedoms” could have been great titles for this post.

Forget Sarah Palin’s “mama grizzly” bears, if you live in the Reno, Nevada area you don’t need me to tell you that wild, black bears are on the rampage. Hundreds of instances have been reported to local authorities where these crafty creatures, some weighing up to 6 or 7 hundred pounds are breaking down the door and helping themselves to the refrigerator. Seems that these outgoing omnivores have learned that the kitchen has more calories, and more taste I suspect, than road-kill and berry patches. According to wildlife officials, it takes only 1 successful attempt to crack into your cupboards, just one shot at foraging in your food pantry and the bears never forget it. Not unlike the lines from the movie Splash when the late John Candy offered, “Hey, when I find something that works I stick with it.”

Interestingly, the moment the burglarizing bears learn a better way at securing the food they need to survive, they abandon their innate, natural habits, ingrained since the beginning of their species, for a more efficient way of getting things done. If it ain’t working, it ain’t working, so time to move on, the hell with the status quo…NO doing it just for doing it sake.

How cool would it be if voters could learn that quickly on their feet?

Each election cycle, we jump on a political see-saw, tipping it to either the Democrats or the Republicans, like it really, truly matters. We get all worked up about one party or another, one candidate or another yet in the end we elect a politician. They promise change and all we get is short-changed. They swear an allegiance to our Constitution and as soon as their right hand falls they set out to circumvent it. Soon they are voting more for their pockets than for their people.

New party in power, identical power grabs. Same old, same old.

At least bears are smart enough to adapt, to think on their paws, to change what isn’t working into a system that works for them.

LOST doesn’t mean Lost for Good. For all of our frailty, all of our short comings, human beings can survive against tremendous odds. Though many believe that wilderness highlights human weakness, once again a survival story, this time of a missing Colorado woman reminds us just how resilient we can be.

I know it sounds impossible, even highly unlikely but we can survive without food, custom shelter and excess water in some pretty wild situations and for a decent amount of time.

I still believe survival is a mindset, a train of thought void of panic and feebleness. Today, we are conditioned to believe that survival is dependent on a backpack full of gear and a mind full of learned skills, to successfully survive. It’s more about temperament than technology, more mental than mechanical. What we need, thank goodness, we already possess. It’s in us.

You and I are a product of thousands of years of walking out into the wild, Eden or Africa, and making our way to the end of the day. Humans, if nothing else, are survivors.

Transparency and accountability in politics and economics should always be our goal as a free society. The process of clarity and answerability is mandatory if we are to believe in and support the actions of those that represent us in Washington, DC and on Wall Street. As we watch the combining of the bills in the House of Representatives and the Senate, we should all pay close attention to the language, refusing to endorse any statute that fails to call for an ongoing and thorough audit the Federal Reserve. To the degree that officials, both in Congress and at the Fed, balk at the thought of transparency, we should push for even tougher language.

Taking a look at the Bernanke Books can only be a good thing.

We should never tolerate secrecy in the spending and lending of our currency; nothing good can come from that type of stealth.

BREAKING NEWS: Illinois Tornado. It was a quiet Saturday evening of pizza and TV with my children when the screen went black, followed by an ear-piercing, high-pitched tone. The National Weather Service Emergency Alert System interrupted The Incredibles, announcing a severe thunderstorm/tornado warning for three nearby counties in Illinois. Instantly, they sat up with worry in their eyes as they asked, “Is the tornado coming here?”

I grabbed my SolarLink FR360 weather radio, gave it a crank and listened to the warning anew. Spotters confirmed a large twister contained within a violent band of thunderstorms south-east of house.

My son asked me, “Dad, what happens in a tornado? What should we do?” For the rest of the evening we “staged” a tornado drill. Obviously, tornado preparedness is no joke but role playing “as if” a violent storm was imminent quelled nerves and ingrained the proper skills for a future emergency.

We grabbed our Eton radio, our pillows and my Tactical 5.11 flash light, turned off all the lights and headed for a first floor inner bathroom. Each time our practice drills got a bit faster and smoother; by our 3rd and 4th run we were having fun and their initial fears were gone. My daughter suggested that we leave a deck of UNO cards in “the bathroom drawer incase we ever get stuck in here.”

Practicing (for adults) and playing preparedness with future survival experts is a great way to spend a Saturday night. Killing the lights, working as a team and planing for the unthinkable makes everyone calm and safer. You’re never too young for Mind-Ups.

Watching the news broadcasts, reading the horrifying accounts of the oil slick reaching the Louisiana coast line, I keep hearing the words “drill baby drill” pound in my mind. Doesn’t matter who offered the term, Democrats and Republicans alike, it just makes me sick. Now that we know it’s enormity could surpass the spill of the Exxon Valdez, you wonder if we will ever learn from our mistakes. “Oh, don’t worry. Drilling in the Oceans, the Gulf and the Arctic is safe. No worries.”

I thought about piling on in this post, highlighting the politics, leveling blame for all those involved but I figure Huff, Drudge, Fox, CNN and the like will pick up my slack. If it takes months, as some are now predicting, for BP to cap the submerged leak, there will be plenty of anger and accusation to go around. The blame game is just beginning.

Instead, I wanted to share a picture I took last year in South Florida focusing on the predator and prey relationships in the great circle of life. This truly once in a lifetime shot is replayed around our planet trillions of times a day, where one life in the food chain takes its turn as food the other is briefly sustained. The hunter and the hunted play their rolls and Nature moves on.

Gulf Oil Slick and the Grim Reaper

I’ve often looked at this photo, wondering about the bird and the fish squarely looking each other in the eye. In that instant, they exchange glances just as death prolongs life.

I guess you can blame Mother Nature for Hurricane Katrina, after all, the winds and waves are natural events. But this time, the devastation of that region of the Gulf Coast is our fault. We did this. Think of the Life that we destroyed there.

Death maybe a natural occurrence, but this destruction is ours to own. Who will we look in the eye?

In the event of a nuclear blast detonated by a terrorist organization, the emergency response will need to be a [...]

In the event of a nuclear blast detonated by a terrorist organization, the emergency response will need to be a personal one, at least in the initial 24-72 hours according to an article in USAToday. The Federal government will not be the first responders to the disaster scene. Confounded by the lack of preparation of local agencies, you and I will be on our own. In this scenario, public safety will become personal safety. Looking back on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina for answers, you will need to be your own hero/heroine.

For now, dialing 911 and crossing your fingers should not be a part of your overall plan. This isn’t a slam against any particular governmental agency, it’s a simple statement of fact. When it comes to emergency responders, there are too few of them and too many of us. Self-reliance will be the key to surviving.

The CDC has some helpful tips and techniques for surviving a nuclear blast. Additionally, here are a few things you can be sure of should the worst case scenario happen.

1. Terrorists will target a city, during the day when it is most populated and likely pinpoint an emergency response/police/fire/paramedic center to maximize confusion and minimize the effectiveness of emergency responders.

2. Families will be separated while at work and at school. Is your school currently working on an emergency communication plan? Do you have an alternative communication plan?

3. Emergency rooms and hospitals, should they survive the initial blast and subsequent shockwaves, will be overrun and getting to them will be more hazardous than staying put. Do you know how to administer emergency first aid or perform CPR?

In any future emergency situation, planning now and relying on yourself in that moment, might make all the difference in your world.
