As many of you know, there are not a ton of government assistance programs that I am a fan of; a charitable people are always more powerful. Even in emergency situations there is no stronger force than the compassion, grit and drive of the American People. To that end, I would like to quickly introduce you to a group of passionate, driven women that are doing what they can to help those in need following the devastating storms the last few days in the south.

Though some of you may not agree totally with their politics, you have to dig their passion! On their blog at TWISTERS you will find a substantial list of ways that you can help, right now, today to make a considerable difference in the lives of those hurting this morning in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.

Way to go!

Here are 2 of their suggestions I acted on this morning.

You can call 1-800-SAL-ARMY and donors can text “GIVE” to 80888 to make a $10 donation.

Red Cross : Please help Alabama, Georgia & Miss tornado victims! Text REDCROSS To: 90999 to give $10

Everyone is talking about “going green” and other forms of conservation of late. Cries of “Save the planet” are fairly ubiquitous these days. CNN even ran stories of A Planet in Peril coupled with suggestions for making our world a cleaner, healthier place. For the record, huge fan! Regardless of your stance on global warming and climate change, who wouldn’t want to help out and do what they could to preserve our planet?

While so many seem to focus on the Environment at the macro level, my view of late has dovetailed with a corollary People in Peril message. At the micro environment level many have started to wonder about personal climate change. Wild weather and even wilder financial markets, political uncertainty and terrorist threats, food shortages and threats to our fresh water supplies make some of us look towards preserving at a slightly more personal locale, heaven forbid the unthinkable happen.

Now some in the main stream media call this paranoia, positing fear mongers focused on Armageddon. For me, Hurricane Katrina was a wakeup call. No conspiracy theory intended here, just plain old calculating of the facts. In times of great emergency, survival becomes personal. There simply aren’t enough “responders” to go around. Crossing your fingers doesn’t cut it in the 21st Century. You have to be your own hero/heroine.

When you can’t call on the Government, when you can’t call on outside emergency services, can you call on yourself?

Check out the American Red Cross and the American Preppers Network.

It’s not paranoia, it’s personal conservation.

Does it seem to you that the term survival has taken on a whole new meaning of late? Perhaps you [...]

Does it seem to you that the term survival has taken on a whole new meaning of late? Perhaps you have a growing sense, as I do, that surviving in the 21st Century hits a bit closer to home than some distant wild jungle, mountain top, raging river or desert valley?

For as far back as I can remember survival was synonymous with being lost, seemingly trapped in some unimaginably foreboding and chaotic situation. Survival entailed building an emergency shelter, fending off wild animals or weather, finding food and water, administering emergency first-aid, relying on yourself when you could call no one else. Survival was for super-humans, trapped by chance or accident, built to thrive in the face of risk.

Today, it seems a bit more probable and a good bit more personal for many Americans. Survival isn’t for the other guy. Chaos seems to be creeping ever so closer to home. Threats from wild weather, Wall Street and Washington, DC fill the news. Climate change, corporate welfare, Constitutional assaults, congressional grift and gridlock should serve, if not as a warning, then at the very least as a wakeup call.

Mother Nature or Big Brother, bad weather or bureaucrats.

Power Outages or Political Outrage.

Tornadoes or terrorists attacks.

I cannot think of a better occasion to launch BrianBrawdy.com than on a day when two of the top news stories support my point.

Wild Weather in the Big Apple.

CNN Poll: Majority says government a threat to citizens’ rights

At its core, survival and liberty are one and the same.

Can you believe the news of late? Fires, floods, tornadoes, power outages, shootings, home invasions…the list seems nearly endless. Add to that the story of our compromised national power and water grid computer systems and we could be in for a real mess. It’s gets better. A recent national news TV poll (admittedly unscientific) reported that respondents would vote for a cut in services instead of supporting higher taxes. We tend to forget that a cut in services can mean a cut in police, firefighter, paramedic and other emergency services. In an emergency, man made or Mother Nature based, these diminished services could leave us fending for ourselves.

To that end, starting 1 May the newly redesigned website will be posting videos on my top emergency gear picks, the best techniques for survival and exercises for building the Survivor’s mindset.

I am very excited about sharing these videos with those, either on the road or at home, that are interested in building the proper “crash kit”, skill sets and mental fortitude to survive nearly anything.
