Tamron Hall mixes it up with a scientist and asks, “What about climate change? You have many people who see these severe storms, and not just the tornados, but the strength of hurricanes and even severe storms, we’re getting hail and high winds right now from Texas, I believe, all the way through the Midwest. Is this a result of climate change or an effect of climate change?”  Dr. Howard Bluestein, University of Oklahoma responded,  “Well I can’t speak for hurricanes, but for tornadoes and supercells, I don’t think we can prove whether or not the occurrence of all these bad events this year are due to global warming whatsoever. They could be simply due to natural variability. After all, when you think back to some of the other historic events, like April 30 1974, the tornadoes in Missouri in 1953, the tri-state tornadoes back in 1925. If you through the records, you’ll see that every 20, 30, 40 years there are these tremendous widespread outbreaks and some of them occurred long before we were talking about global warming.”

Not to be undone, Al Roker offers on another MNSBC show, “And you know look – yesterday, or the day before yesterday, we had the tornado in Minneapolis,” Roker blathered.  “We have had these tornadoes and earlier this week we had a tornado in Philadelphia. And so, you know our weather, or climate change is such now that we are seeing this kind of weather not just in rural parts of our country, but in urban centers as well.”

Just wait as other Face Plates join the chorus, putting their political spin on supercell formation and Tornado climatology. No proof, just more propaganda.

Again, would you be able to survive and thrive when a catastrophe strikes a little closer to home?

Real Close Survival (RCS) is pretty straight up. When, not if, but when the next natural or manmade disaster strikes, chances are pretty good that you will be either at home or at your office, perhaps commuting in your car. Let’s do the math. 8-9 hours of work, 11-12 hours at home and a couple hours of commuting gives a fairly good idea of what you could be up against.

Real Close Survival focuses on surviving mayhem whether manmade or wrought by Mother Nature, within familiar surroundings minus the comforts to which you have grown accustomed. According to a recent Gallup Poll, Americans view Immigration policy, poor healthcare, natural disaster response, Federal budget deficit, fuel costs, wars, “lack of money,” Afghanistan and even the war in Iraq as lesser problems than “dissatisfaction with government/Congress/politicians; poor leadership; corruption; abuse of power.” Only the economy and unemployment ranked higher than Uncle Sam as “important problems” confronting our country.

Hello. This would be laughable if it didn’t directly effect our lives.

This should rattle our politicians and elected officials more than the 3.6 magnitude earthquake that struck the DC area early this morning.

Reminder: Only 6 days left until the debut of The Brian Brawdy Show. Talk about feeling like an aftershock to the Capitol Hill gang.

That’s a ton of hype for one human to handle.

So what happens when one can’t rise to the level they’ve been elevated, when the clairvoyant Chief Executive falls short of our lofty expectations, when the Providential POTUS fails to materialize? Our disappointment turns to disgruntlement while the many slowly turn on the man. When the delusional God King myth becomes apparent, when the hype proves hollow as the non-fiction slides into fiction, we never blame ourselves; too busy directing our anger towards the target of our projections, I suspect.

Truth be told, you can’t always blame the myth when things go wrong. Myths are manmade, crafted in our minds, invested with our energy, sustained by our hopes and fears. Even though some superstars begin to believe in the inflated claims, convincing themselves of their own eminence, we are the founders of our fairy tales, the makers of our myths.

With all that currently confronts our country from a sliding economy, oil gushers, terrorist threats and natural disasters we’d all be better of to remember that you can’t spell mortal without the “m” in Obama.

I grabbed my SolarLink FR360 weather radio, gave it a crank and listened to the warning anew. Spotters confirmed a large twister contained within a violent band of thunderstorms south-east of house.

My son asked me, “Dad, what happens in a tornado? What should we do?” For the rest of the evening we “staged” a tornado drill. Obviously, tornado preparedness is no joke but role playing “as if” a violent storm was imminent quelled nerves and ingrained the proper skills for a future emergency.

We grabbed our Eton radio, our pillows and my Tactical 5.11 flash light, turned off all the lights and headed for a first floor inner bathroom. Each time our practice drills got a bit faster and smoother; by our 3rd and 4th run we were having fun and their initial fears were gone. My daughter suggested that we leave a deck of UNO cards in “the bathroom drawer incase we ever get stuck in here.”

Practicing (for adults) and playing preparedness with future survival experts is a great way to spend a Saturday night. Killing the lights, working as a team and planing for the unthinkable makes everyone calm and safer. You’re never too young for Mind-Ups.
