In the 2nd Buried Logic Podcast produced by Mauro Media, I had the great opportunity to interview a truly inspiring adventurer.

Modern-day explorer, Eric Larsen’s life epitomizes adventure. A polar explorer, dog musher, adventure racer and educator, he has spent the past 12 years of his life adventuring in some of the most remote and wild places left on earth. Totaled, Eric has traveled enough wilderness miles to circle the globe over two times.

On January 3rd 2009, Eric successfully led an international team to the South Pole – covering nearly 600 miles in 41 days. Eric is now the 3rd American in history to have skied to both the North and South Poles.

In 2006, Eric and Lonnie Dupre completed the first ever summer expedition to the North Pole. During this journey, the duo pulled and paddled specially modified canoes over 600 miles of shifting sea ice and open ocean. Eric’s other expeditions include a 700-mile dog sled journey through northern Ontario, a six week dog sled journey in the barren lands of the Canadian Arctic, several training trips to Hudson Bay and countless dog sled races. He has also summited Mt. McKinley, ridden his bike across the United States, been a back country ranger in Alaska, a white water canoe guide in Colorado and wilderness trip leader in Hawaii.

In 2008, Eric was elected as one of Outside Magazine’s Eco All Stars. He was also inducted as a member of the prestigious Explorer’s Club based in New York City. A gifted communicator, Eric travels extensively giving motivational and educational lectures to schools, universities, non profit organizations and corporate groups.

Currently, Eric is planning and preparing for the Save the Poles expedition. Slated to begin in November 2009, Eric and his team members will travel to the North Pole, South Pole and the summit of Everest all in one year. The ‘Save the Poles’ expedition will journey to these last frozen places in attempt to tell their amazing story while promoting clean energy solutions to the problem of Climate Change.

Eric lives in Grand Marais, Minnesota where he is busy training and planning.

In 2009, renowned Arctic Explorer Eric Larsen will begin an unprecedented journey to the top, bottom and roof of the world. During a continuous 365-day period, Larsen will mount major unsupported expeditions to the North and South Poles and an expedition to the summit of Mt. Everest. This feat has never been completed in one year. To date, only 15 people (no Americans) in history have been to all three ‘poles.’ The expedition’s objectives are:

• Complete the first-ever expedition to Mt. Everest, the North Pole and South Pole in a continuous 365-day period.
• Promote clean energy solutions, advocate strategies for reducing carbon emissions post Kyoto 2012 and collect relevant scientific data.
• Produce a documentary film, book and educational CD-ROM that focuses on global warming, teamwork and the spirit of adventure.
• Develop a post expedition multi-media lecture series.

When the White House Chief of Staff for President Obama, Rahm Emanual stated his “Rule one: Never allow a crisis to go to waste,” he could have been very well intentioned. I don’t know. None of us do really.

That said, I absolutely understand struggle and a springboard, but the political philosophy of wasting a crisis just tweaks me.

Anyone viewing a crisis as a catalyst to some other end, and end that could not have been reached or achieved minus the jolting catastrophe, is a bit unsettling to me. It almost feels like a bait and switch, like a distracting “find the pea under the nutshell” game performed by a street magician. It smacks of ulterior motives or hidden agendas. I’m just not sure. I just can’t put my finger on the uneasy feeling I have.

So for now…

Rule one: Never allow a crisis to go to waste.

Rule two: When the leopard licks your hand, draw your sword.

You see, here’s the thing about a recent story in Science Magazine where the lead scientist in a report on climbing temperatures and the turmoil they bring to the Arctic region should give us, all of us, a wake up call.

In the Review of the article, Eric Post warns “These rapid changes may be a bellwether of changes to come at lower latitudes and have the potential to affect ecosystem services related to natural resources, food production, climate regulation, and cultural integrity. We highlight areas of ecological research that deserve priority as the Arctic continues to warm.”

Now, most will be fired up about this report lamenting the obvious assault on seals, sea ice, polar bears and additional flora and fauna. They will focus on the adverse affects on sea levels and people living along them. Through all the hoopla, many will overlook the hidden long-term impact on ALL of us. What “happens in Vegas” may very well stay in Vegas, but it isn’t true in the Tundra.

It easy to forget that our planet and its varied ecosystems are intimately interconnected at vast and ubiquitous levels. What happens in the Arctic is a Canary in our planet-wide coal mine.

Roger Stephens, 61, accused of slapping a crying 2-year-old toddler in a Suburban Atlanta Wal-Mart on Monday will remain in jail at least until next week.  Mr. “if you don’t shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you” has been ordered held in the Gwinnett County jail until his next court appearance on Sept. 8.

Finally some good news to report. No bail for the bully!

Could it be a bit of a red flag?  Is it possible that Mr. “See, I told you I would shut her up” is in need of a lengthy lockup?

So, if his perceived sworn duty is to walk into a public place, open fire and recklessly endanger the lives of dozens and kill another human being, it’s time for him to GO. Qualify his mental status, provide him a fair trial, and if convicted, stamp him Return 2 Vendor.

In the opening months of the Return 2 Vendor portion of my website, I have received tremendous comment and feedback, both pro and con, about my position of defective minds being “returned” to their original factory. Death Penalty debaters, on both sides have made their positions clear to me.

As much as I humbly respect and bow to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, my sense of compassion is slightly different. A defective and tortured human mind should be retired, put out of its misery with all due speed. Not as a form of punishment or penalty, but as a plan to end its pain, torment and misery.

I know, I’m a horrible, heartless human being to those of you who disagree with me. Sometimes though, in certain cases…compassion is only compassion when it uses its teeth.

Return 2 Vendor

The Associated Press is reporting that the Pastor’s body was “put into unnatural pose.”

Though there are some “promising leads” there are no suspects in this brutal murder, according to Police.

Obviously, and understandably, pastors and parishioners in the area are terrified. Regardless of the ultimate motive, terrorizing the local population is a part of the killer(s) plan.

How Exercise and Oxygen make all the difference in the World.

There is one number, I believe, that is terribly important when it comes to our overall health and mental fitness.  20.

We’ll get back to this in just a moment.

That exercise is tremendously beneficial to your physical and mental health is a clinically supported fact that is beyond debate. No reputable doctor or scientist doubts the evidence. Exercise, oxygen and endorphins are proven to be meaningful antidepressants as well. When you are on the move, your mental outlook improves. Move your Mood.

This is probably also a great place to, once again,  insert my disclaimer. ** I am not a doctor, a psychologist or psychiatrist.** Now, for those of us that suffer from a diagnosed, major clinical depression or chemical disorder, only the valuable time spent with your doctor, will hash out a plan, best suited for you.

Exercise, an idea loathed by many, along with increased oxygen (The BIG O) is not as difficult to achieve or accommodate into our daily schedules as one might believe. The exercise and oxygen needed is far from the gut-busting-sweat-slinging-lung-burning-leg-cramping, head-aching….OK, you get the picture.

Moderate exercise, a brisk walk, a bike ride, a sunrise hike, a set of stairs every so often, is all we are talking about. No herculean marathons, no Mount Everest, no oceanic swims, no out-sprinting a speeding bullet. (Though it worked pretty good for Superman).

Your brain digs oxygen. Plain and simple. Think about it. You have one brain, yet two huge lungs created for the sole purpose of supplying that brain with oxygen. Pretty straight froward.

Back to the number 20.

A twenty-four hour day has 1,440 minutes. Let’s say we grouped those minutes in such a way, that it actually made it easier to schedule your “Brisk Breathing” session. Bottom line for your brain, you need about 20 minutes, five days a week to jump start your personal mental health program. All I’m suggesting is that you donate 1/72 of your day, or 20 minutes to Moving your Mood. I call them 20 Minute Victories.

It only takes 20 minutes to get your brain the oxygen it needs to thrive and survive.

Now, as you progress, you’ll be moved to combine some 20 Minute Victories and perhaps head out for a 40 or 60 minute walk; totally up to you.

Remember to start out at a comfortable pace and “progressively adapt” as you go. One last tip; I find it beneficial to inhale through your nose, get two full lungs of air as you do and exhale FULLY.

Your brain, body and mind will thank you for it!!

How Interaction and Exploration Elevates your Mood and your Mind.

“What other animal retires?” Michael Roberts asks. “If a lion retires today, tomorrow morning he becomes his brother’s breakfast.”

This is a great read about entrepreneurial brothers Michael and Steven Roberts.

That their story falls, not under the CNN banner of Bold or Brilliant or Brave or Best in America, but Black in America, is fairly sad.

I couldn’t care less about the color of their skin, only their courage, character and commitment to thrive.

Effie Ratley, 29, killed in 2007 by her husband Michael Ratley, when he beat her in the head with a hammer as she rested in bed. He was sentenced this week to life in prison for her murder.  According to CNN, “Man goes from heroic husband to hammer-wielding wife killer.“

The former swimsuit model Jasmine Fiore, 28, was found Saturday stuffed into a suitcase inside a Dumpster. Her teeth and fingers had been removed. Her ex-husband, Ryan Alexander Jenkins, now wanted for the crime.

In an update to the story, CNN is reporting “Model’s breast implants prove key to identifying body.” According to police investigators, the victim’s Breast implants’ serial number helped identify the body.

As for Return 2 Vendor candidates, hard to overlook these two.

Reading stories like this, it’s hard not to quickly picture the “horrific” injures pop singer Rihanna suffered at the hands, fists actually, of convicted felon Chris Brown.

When will we as a country, a court system and a community stand up and aggressively pursue and prosecute (NO PLEA BARGAINING) those who abuse woman and children?

We are all victimized when we ignore, therefore permit, these types of assaults and homicides to continue.
