All weekend long, the results of a recent Rasmussen poll have been eating at me. According to data in the poll, forty-seven percent (47%) believe our nation’s best days are in the past. Almost half of us think our future will not be as bright? I for one, am looking forward to a future that proves them wrong.

Our current economic, political and social battles are ALL winnable. Though some might opt to tap out, to surrender and look towards the political class for answers, many others are ready to rumble, to draw a line in the sand and get back to winning. True, we have some formidable obstacles to negotiate, while additional hurdles seem to grow in size and number everyday. But that’s what makes this particular moment in time, the time to be alive. Hands-down-no-doubt.

I’m not attempting to be motivational here, you want motivation call Tony or Zig. I’m simply stating what I believe to be a basic fact. We do our best when we are pushed, when we are challenged, when we are dared, when fate summons the very best in us to beat back the absolute worst of situations. I believe we thrive when we remember our own buried logic. When we go “All in” there isn’t anything we can’t beat.

Now, a huge part of thriving is personal flexibility and adaptability. “Shoot low Sheriff, they’re riding Shetland ponies” William Hawkins once wrote. Though the news is full of reasons to wonder about our future, those that throw themselves into the fight, those that adapt to adapting have nothing to worry about. The rest, apparently fall into the 47%.

As always….

Feel free to slam me on Facebook

At its core, Survival and Liberty are one and the same. Successfully confronting the headwinds, the uphills, the changing terrains [...]

At its core, Survival and Liberty are one and the same.

Successfully confronting the headwinds, the uphills, the changing terrains and weather of any landscape is the key to survival. You stand, you take whatever the topography and the temperature throws at you and simply push on to your destination.

Compare this with the definition of liberty. According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, liberty is the “state of being free within a society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life, behavior or political views.”

Survival, in my opinion, is the state of being free within a landscape from oppressive conditions imposed by nature, chance and fate on one’s freedom of movement and destination. Confronting Mother Nature and her laws or battling man-made impositions with its threats requires a straight-forward skill set.

Navigating economic, political, social and wilderness terrains calls for stamina and constant negotiation.

Freedom is freedom from oppressive obstacles regardless of their origin or makeup.

Liberty, Independence and Survival; different terrain, same temperament.

In the 2nd Buried Logic Podcast produced by Mauro Media, I had the great opportunity to interview a truly inspiring adventurer.

Modern-day explorer, Eric Larsen’s life epitomizes adventure. A polar explorer, dog musher, adventure racer and educator, he has spent the past 12 years of his life adventuring in some of the most remote and wild places left on earth. Totaled, Eric has traveled enough wilderness miles to circle the globe over two times.

Eric Larsen Explorer

On January 3rd 2009, Eric successfully led an international team to the South Pole – covering nearly 600 miles in 41 days. Eric is now the 3rd American in history to have skied to both the North and South Poles.

In 2006, Eric and Lonnie Dupre completed the first ever summer expedition to the North Pole. During this journey, the duo pulled and paddled specially modified canoes over 600 miles of shifting sea ice and open ocean. Eric’s other expeditions include a 700-mile dog sled journey through northern Ontario, a six week dog sled journey in the barren lands of the Canadian Arctic, several training trips to Hudson Bay and countless dog sled races. He has also summited Mt. McKinley, ridden his bike across the United States, been a back country ranger in Alaska, a white water canoe guide in Colorado and wilderness trip leader in Hawaii.

In 2008, Eric was elected as one of Outside Magazine’s Eco All Stars. He was also inducted as a member of the prestigious Explorer’s Club based in New York City. A gifted communicator, Eric travels extensively giving motivational and educational lectures to schools, universities, non profit organizations and corporate groups.

Currently, Eric is planning and preparing for the Save the Poles expedition. Slated to begin in November 2009, Eric and his team members will travel to the North Pole, South Pole and the summit of Everest all in one year. The ‘Save the Poles’ expedition will journey to these last frozen places in attempt to tell their amazing story while promoting clean energy solutions to the problem of Climate Change.

Eric lives in Grand Marais, Minnesota where he is busy training and planning.

Eric Larsen YouTube

In 2009, renowned Arctic Explorer Eric Larsen will begin an unprecedented journey to the top, bottom and roof of the world. During a continuous 365-day period, Larsen will mount major unsupported expeditions to the North and South Poles and an expedition to the summit of Mt. Everest. This feat has never been completed in one year. To date, only 15 people (no Americans) in history have been to all three ‘poles.’ The expedition’s objectives are:

Complete the first-ever expedition to Mt. Everest, the North Pole and South Pole in a continuous 365-day period.

Promote clean energy solutions, advocate strategies for reducing carbon emissions post Kyoto 2012 and collect relevant scientific data.

Produce a documentary film, book and educational CD-ROM that focuses on global warming, teamwork and the spirit of adventure.

Develop a post expedition multi-media lecture series.

I just can’t let it go. Believe me, I’ve tried. That said, it pounds at me with each passing day.

When the White House Chief of Staff for President Obama, Rahm Emanual stated his “Rule one: Never allow a crisis to go to waste,” he could have been very well intentioned. I don’t know. None of us do really.

That said, I absolutely understand struggle and a springboard, but the political philosophy of wasting a crisis just tweaks me.

Anyone viewing a crisis as a catalyst to some other end, and end that could not have been reached or achieved minus the jolting catastrophe, is a bit unsettling to me. It almost feels like a bait and switch, like a distracting “find the pea under the nutshell” game performed by a street magician. It smacks of ulterior motives or hidden agendas. I’m just not sure. I just can’t put my finger on the uneasy feeling I have.

So for now…

Rule one: Never allow a crisis to go to waste.

Rule two: When the leopard licks your hand, draw your sword.

I recently conducted an interview for an upcoming podcast with the co-author of the new book See New Now. During the discussion, Jerry de Jaager highlighted one of the chapters in this amazing work entitled The Baboon Reflex. It focuses on a discussion between Robert Sapolsky and the EDGE website.

According to Dr. Sapolsky, “When baboons hunt together they’d love to get as much meat as possible, but they’re not very good at it. The baboon is a much more successful hunter when he hunts by himself than when he hunts in a group because they screw up every time they’re in a group. Say three of them are running as fast as possible after a gazelle, and they’re gaining on it, and they’re deadly. But something goes on in one of their minds—I’m anthropomorphizing here—and he says to himself, “What am I doing here? I have no idea whatsoever, but I’m running as fast as possible, and this guy is running as fast as possible right behind me, and we had one hell of a fight about three months ago. I don’t quite know why we’re running so fast right now, but I’d better just stop and slash him in the face before he gets me.” The baboon suddenly stops and turns around, and they go rolling over each other like Keystone cops and the gazelle is long gone because the baboons just became disinhibited. They get crazed around each other at every juncture.”

Infighting derails the pursuit of happiness? Go on!

That the media would rather cover two baboons clawing at each other is fairly obvious. Turn on any news program of late and it is easy to see how we are all acting like baboons. (No, I’m not calling anyone a monkey). What may not be as obvious is the overall and long-term benefit for those in certain political circles and media outlets when they continually stoke our inner baboon. They seem quite happy inflating and inflaming contentious agitations of race, social status, political affiliation, environmental and economical positions, foreign affairs and other “foreboding threats,” all the while distracting us from the affairs at hand. In the ultimate bait and switch, once preoccupied with the clash (they believe and hope), the electorate will grow disinterested and apathetic towards topics of merit; namely personal liberty embraced by a profoundly free and radiant market.

We have a few hurdles ahead of us as a community and a country, that’s fairly certain. Equally certain we will prevail, survive and ultimately thrive. In the meantime we cannot afford to be distracted and turn our focus away from the issues which matter most to a free people. As we acquiesce and concede to the diversion, our freedoms are fading away. With each impending disaster, a new decree is issued to save us from ourselves. With each capitulation we grow more captive.

Our democracy is quickly becoming an exercise in distraction. While we battle, they put more laws on the books. While we wrangle, they write more regulations and ram them through Congress. While we argue, they move to amend our Constitution.

In the end, infighting only aids gazelles and governments.

In a ceremony scheduled this afternoon at the White House, President Barack Obama will posthumously award SFC Jared Monti the Medal of Honor, the first under his Presidency . The award will be accepted on behalf of Jared’s parents, Paul and Janet Monti as their son gave his own life attempting to save another soldier.

According to CNN, Paul Monti believes his son was doing what “he felt he had to do,” and simply followed the soldier’s creed, “You never leave a soldier behind.”

In concurring, President Obama today stated, “It has been nearly 150 years since our nation first presented this medal for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty.”

Tuesday’s White House Press Release read, “With complete disregard for his own safety, SFC Monti moved from behind the cover of rocks into the face of withering enemy fire,” and “SFC Monti’s acts of heroism inspired the patrol to fight off the larger enemy force.”

Today SFC Monti receives the highest Medal bestowed by our Nation’s military.

Again, Manjushri Jared Monti.

When I read the title “The Changing Face of the Arctic” on CNN, what first jumped to mind is that it could very well have been titled the Changing Face of Alaska or the Changing face of Alabama, Arkansas or Arizona. Maybe Trouble in the Tundra could be rewritten as Trouble in Tennessee or Trouble in Texas.

You see, here’s the thing about a recent story in Science Magazine where the lead scientist in a report on climbing temperatures and the turmoil they bring to the Arctic region should give us, all of us, a wake up call.

In the Review of the article, Eric Post warns “These rapid changes may be a bellwether of changes to come at lower latitudes and have the potential to affect ecosystem services related to natural resources, food production, climate regulation, and cultural integrity. We highlight areas of ecological research that deserve priority as the Arctic continues to warm.”

Now, most will be fired up about this report lamenting the obvious assault on seals, sea ice, polar bears and additional flora and fauna. They will focus on the adverse affects on sea levels and people living along them. Through all the hoopla, many will overlook the hidden long-term impact on ALL of us. What “happens in Vegas” may very well stay in Vegas, but it isn’t true in the Tundra.

It easy to forget that our planet and its varied ecosystems are intimately interconnected at vast and ubiquitous levels. What happens in the Arctic is a Canary in our planet-wide coal mine.
