Karl Rove’s ‘malcontents’ and Free Speech Flip Flops

Published on April 21st, 2010

In a followup to an earlier post, The First Amendment Flip Flop, we learn now that those protesting at Karl Rove’s book signing appearances are labeled ‘malcontents‘ and publicly maligned from his pulpit. Yet again, a free speech one-eighty by a political figure. In fairness, most of us know that politics is the art of oscillation and obscuration. As their opinions fluctuate in the prevailing winds of the day, the best politicians wrap their wobbles in abstruse rhetoric. Apparently, when it comes to freedom of expression, we have to draw the line for them.

The right to free speech is a Universal Right that knows no borders. The First Amendment, I believe should be a global declaration. Concurring or dissenting opinions count, and so do those offering them.

You either believe in an individual’s inherent right to express themselves or you do not. It’s like being pregnant. You either are or you are not. No wiggle room, no grey area. Yes or no? When it comes to free speech, you either support it unconditionally or you do not. You can’t commend those who agree with you and condemn those that do not.

There is no greater definition of hypocrisy.
