I received many emails, tweets and comments regarding the post The Mental Health of Career Politicians. One particular response stated, in part, “What we need are citizen legislatures – people who earn their living doing something productive and who occasionally go to DC or sign on to a website to legislate.” (At the time of this post I did not have permission to attach the persons name.)
Reading this reminded me of a tiny, quaint line in Article 1, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution. “The Congress shall assemble at least once in every Year…” Is it possible that the founders thought legislators would need to be coerced to convene Congress? Not unlike jury duty, Representatives and Senators would have to be dragged, kicking and screaming to The Hill?
When did running for Congress switch from a noble duty and responsibility to the electorate to a retirement plan for the elected?
I do not believe the Founding Fathers could have imagined just how power hungry career politicians can be.
How have we let Washington DC become Washington dis-connected?
I blame you and me and the lack of term limits.
