Ballsy or Bonsai? Courage or Conformity? Shaking the Cage or Walking the Line?
In response to any earlier post, I received a note from a friend with the following quote by Dr. Robert Anthony. “The opposite of bravery is not cowardice but conformity.” In doing a bit of research I stumbled across a similar thought from Rollo May. “The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, it is conformity.” Either way, personally or publicly, independently or collectively the thought hits home.
A few more Sunday morning quotes…
Oliver Wendall Holmes, Jr. wrote, “We are all tattooed in our cradles with the beliefs of our tribe; the record may seem superficial, but it is indelible” or as Jean-Jacques Rousseau penned, “We are born free and everywhere we are in chains.” Perhaps my favorite quote from James Joyce speaks of our souls being trapped, constrained and stifled by “nets flung at it to hold it back from flight.”
They key to life, the key to surviving in the 21st Century is a healthy dose of Shaking the Cage.
